On the Edge: Ireland's Coasts and Cliffs

Although swimming may not be one of your primary reasons for visiting the lush and verdant country known as Ireland, it still has some of the most gasp-worthy coastal towns and views to experience (bathing suits aside). It doesn't matter which end of the island you are located in, driving along the Coastal Highway or even taking the DART out of Dublin for the day can give you a view to remember for days to come.

Located on the Western coast are the infamous and tourist-laden Cliffs of Moher, and although I would not recommend visiting it on a Sunday in a tour group (as I did), I sincerely believe that a visit on a weekday is the way to go. The walk can be a bit strenuous for those with a fear of heights, but to hear the waves crash and wear away at the cliffs and to see birds circle high above to swoop into hidden coves was worth the slightly raised blood pressure and throng of international, sheepish tourists. For those who like to get as close to the edge as possible, you can find yourself relaxing on the grassy patches below the general footpath to watch the ocean and flocks of birds swirl in a controlled frenzy. Adults, expect to pay 6 Euro for the lovely experience.

If you find yourself centered in Dublin, a day trip to Howth is the way to go. A picnic by the water on a warm day and a quick drink at one of the local pubs is ideal for this beachy fisherman's abode, and it is only a half hour away by DART. Or you could make a pit stop at any one of the various seafood restaurants along the water and within town. With food spots called Octopussy and Crabby Jo's, you're bound to find some interesting seafood delights. Musicians and street performers can be found casually strumming along the rocks, as well as families and the occasional photographer and artist. Don't forget to walk out towards the light house; the walk surrounds you with water on both sides as you make your way down the path.

Spend as much time as you can by Ireland's coasts, even stopping along the Coastal Highway while driving is worth the journey.
