Within the past 48 hours, numerous plates of roasted pork and beans have been served in front of me. A seamless procession of platanos and rice tantalized my eyes and my nostrils, mouth watering as sangria flowed from pitcher to cup. It's no wonder that restaurants such as Rumba Cubana and La Havana 59 seem to be doing so well: the restaurants are always full when I go. But where to get your kick of Miami without breaking the bank?

Both Rumba Cubana and La Havana 59 have a lot to offer, each with their own individual experiences. Rumba Cubana in Guttenburg has tasty food (try the Lechon Asado) for very affordable prices, and the location is perfect for a walk by the Hudson. A casual or formal lunch here is the idea, with bright decor and decent drink options that keep the atmosphere comfortable. Some highlights on the menu are the aguacate relleno, the arroz con pollos, and the chicharron. However, if you're looking for a Friday night out and don't mind paying a little more for a slightly lesser quality product, La Havana 59 in Moonachie is your place to be. There is a bar that is semi-separated from the general dining area, which is centered around the dance floor. Not to say that the food is bad, I did enjoy the coconut shrimp although they were a little on the dry side, but it is definitely the restaurant of choice for the music and dance lovers rather than the foodie connoisseurs.

And how could I forget Las Palmas? If you find yourself in the lil Havana of New Jersey, otherwise known as West New York, you can order a decent drink while enjoying the presence of local bands and musicians. Definitely order the churrasco (medium rare, please!); this is by far my favorite, and one of the best dishes Las Palmas has to offer.

Moral of this story: go out there and try some of the great Cuban food this area has to offer.
